| Gettysburg Sees War Again, This Time Over a Gambling License Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the site of one of the most famous and deadly battles of the American Civil War will now be the site of a protracted battle against a more timely foe: gambling. The state of Pennsylvania is now engaged in debating which of the many proposals it has received for gambling licenses will be selected. Last year, a group of investors formed a group called Chance Enterprises in order to apply to the state gambling regulatory body for one of the gambling licenses it will award sometime later this year. The Chance Enterprises investors seek to build a gambling facility that will primarily contain slot machines. Their proposed gambling site has already been named: if they win the license, the spot will be called “Crossroads Gaming Resort and Spa.” The problem, however, came when the Chance Enterprise group announced their proposed location for the gambling site: Gettysburg. The Civil War Preservation Trust, a not- for- profit group formed to protect historically significant sites from the War Between the States, has brought out the big guns to fight against the threat of gambling coming to Gettysburg. The group has put Gettysburg on top of its list of the 10 most endangered Civil War battlefields, released Tuesday. Gettysburg joined sites in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Washington, D.C. on the endangered list. The trust's president, James Lighthizer, echoed the words of Abraham Lincoln when he railed against the idea of putting anything as banal as a gambling site on the “hallowed ground” of Gettysburg. “[Gettysburg], where more than 600,000 Americans gave their lives, is being paved over in favor of shopping malls, housing tracts and even gambling casinos," he protested. Gettysburg was the site of a three- day fight, and is widely considered by Civil War historians to be the battle that turned the tide in favor of the northern states, sending Confederate soldiers into retreat. The site is also famous because it was on the Gettysburg battlefield that Abraham Lincoln delivered the legendary Gettysburg Address, which included the eminent lines excerpted below: “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal… [T]hat this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” However, the Chance Enterprises group suggested that the preservationist society’s attempt to characterize Gettysburg as endangered is nothing more than an attempt to attract more money to its cause. “It is amazing how the Gettysburg Battlefield has gone from not even being on the trust's list of 25 most endangered battlefield to the top of the list overnight…,” said David LeVan, the CEO of Chance Enterprises. “Clearly, the trust is lining its coffers.”
