| Indonesian National Party Legislator Impeached for Taking Part in Gambling Study A senior legislator from the National Mandate Party of Indonesia has been impeached by fellow legislators from his own party in the House of Representatives for taking a trip to Egypt to study the country’s fledgling gambling industry. Egypt, a fellow Muslim country, has built casinos in many major cities even though many Muslims say that gambling is in violation of the Islamic faith. House legislator Djoko Edhi Sucipto Abdurrahman traveled to Egypt with a group of fellow Indonesian elected officials and businessman in order to, ostensibly, study the country’s gambling laws. The trip was taken at a time when Indonesia was considering proposals to legalize gambling in certain areas. Other people, however, said that the trip was nothing more than a barely disguised vacation, paid for by taxpayers. Regardless, the very suggestion of Djoko Edhi Sucipto Abdurrahman being involved in gambling has now caused him to lose his job as a lawmaker and National Mandate Party member. National Party spokesman Zulfikli said that the senior official had gone against the moral values of the organization, and indeed their very platform, by taking part in the gambling study. Party leader Sutrisno Bachir said that he had heard many complaints from the organization that forms the backbone of his party: the 30 million-strong Islamic organization Muhammadiyah. "Other PAN members would end up being fired if they in any way promoted gambling because PAN does not tolerate gambling," he threatened. The senior legislator was dismissed from his party, and his post, when 56 National Party members voted for his impeachment in order to make a statement against gambling. The vote against Djoko Edhi Sucipto Abdurrahman was, however, by no means unanimous: 45 members voted against his impeachment, and 7 abstained from the vote. Djoko Edhi Sucipto Abdurrahman is the very first legislator to have been recalled, for any reason, during the current 2004- 2009 session, although many parties have recalled members because of internal disagreements in the past. Some other legislators objected to the National Party’s action because they claimed that it violates the basic spirit of democracy and, perhaps even more critically, the law. Permadi, of the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle, was one such legislator. "Indonesia now has a direct election system. Parties cannot not recall their legislators because they were elected by the people," he said. House Speaker Agung Laksono, however, defended the National Party’s decision to impeach one of its members. He said that every party may do so if the member violates the party’s basic principles, such as Djoko Edhi Sucipto Abdurrahman did when he took his gambling study trip to Egypt. The impeached party member said that he would abide by his party’s decision, since it had been decided for a vote.
